Fashionista Girl's Bedroom
Damarys writes:
Hello Henri,
My daughter's room is rectangular shape and very large, has two large windows on each end (front and back at the house) and one small to the font side (Yellow boxes). The blue box represents a protuberance from the wall inside the room (furnace breathing), the green is a small door to a walking closet (used as a storage; too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer). The walls are covered with pretty delicate wallpaper which I am willing to remove. The black box is the door from the foyer, the gray box is a corner, a void an armoire could fit in the space and flash to the wall. She sleeps in a pretty queen size white metal bed.
My daughter loves red but she looks beautiful in dark pinks. She will be turning 11 in July. She loves to read and loves to sketch clothing, she wants to be a fashion designer. I would appreciate if you could help me with ideas of how to decorate her room according to her taste in color. I know I could set up two sections in the room, leisure and sleeping area.
Thank you so much,
Damarys

Hi Damarys:
Thank you for the great question...without seeing a floorplan of some sort, I would guess that you would really want to feature the beautiful white bed in the room. Maybe head on as you come into the room, or how about in the corner on an angle for a more dramatic look. Now if she loves red then you should definitely paint the wall behind the white bed the red color so it will pop against it, so do two walls in the red and the other two walls in a the neutral white so it does not get to dark. Red shades are easier to find accessories that will work in the room, but you can also mix in some hot pinks, light pinks and even purple colors in some smaller items, to spice it up a bit. You do need a neutral color like the white to balance all the other colors. Hang a wonderful color dyed mosquito netting canopy over the bed, that she can decorate with beads and feathers to her taste.
As a future fashion designer, you would want to encourage her, so some ideas for the room are:
- Set up an area where she can sketch drawings ( with cubbies for pencils, markers and pads), computer, do homework and maybe eat a snack, so a great table and chairs would be great at the other end of the room.
- Take an area on the white wall and place some 2x2 ceiling acoustical tiles (maybe 9 of them), let her help you pick out a great fabric to cover them in, something to coordinate with the bedspread or curtains. Then cut the pieces for each tile and staple on the back. Place double sided velcro strips on all corners of the back of the tiles and glue to the wall, you can remove them later if you want. Place them in three rows of three across with about 1/2 inch between each tile. She can feature all her fashion sketches on the tiles with pins. She can cut samples of fabrics and place them on the wall also.
- It would also be great to have a wire mannequin in the room for her to place clothes on it and accessorize it like a fashion model. Don't forget to give her a full length mirror of course so that she can see the clothes before they hit the catwalk.
She and her friends will have so much fun in her new "Fashionista Bedroom".
Thank you and good luck,
Henri
