Interior Design Advice

Just think about adding some decorative storage boxes into your Home Décor, not just your closets. They are great for so many reasons, not only are they practical to place some items in them, keep areas neat and tidy, but you can make them work and add punch to unexpected areas around your house.

The obvious places to have larger storage bins and boxes are areas like your closets, bathroom/ kitchen shelves, home office and play rooms. These boxes come in all shapes, colors, sizes and styles to fit and compliment your existing décor, they don’t cost very much and you can even label them to find items quicker. Just make sure you maintain them to similar shapes and sizes so they are easier to stack and fit into compartments. Also very important is to buy them all in matching/ coordinating colors or patterns so the area does not look cluttered and disorganized! These functional storage boxes are best purchased in materials like plastic, cardboard, tin and woven natural fibers.

Now for the unexpected areas like your Dining Room, Living Room, Bedroom, Entry Foyer and even out-door living spaces. Not only are these bins more decorative, but normally much smaller or much larger than the ones mentioned above. There are so many options now a days like hand painted pieces, metal, fine woods, fabric covered, mirrored, glass, porcelain, stone and even carved resin. The best shapes are square or rectangular, but some fun ones are round, oval and octagonal. If you are using multiple ones in one display then the flat lids are more convenient for stacking, but for single sculptural purposes the boxes with great top handles or knobs are most attractive, some even have great feet on them!

You can have a lot of fun with them. In your Bedroom you can place a box on your dresser or chest and stack an accessory, small floral or even an accent lamp for a layered effect. Even stack them on top of an Armoire to bring color and pattern up there. You can make a “Table-scape” on your Dining Room table for drama and height. Place a flat top box or stack two and place a sheer scarf up and over them and down the other side. Then take a candlestick, accessory or vase and place one on top and another on the table itself for a step up effect. Just place a lower size item like a bowl or floral one the scarf at table height, so then you will have three items spiraling up to the chandelier or ceiling. You can even store extra candles, napkins or silverware inside the boxes while they are on display. On your cocktail table you can store the remote controls, magazines, family photos, coasters or leave one open and place a seasonal floral inside or ornaments as a conversation piece. Take larger sturdier boxes and stack them high enough to place a small piece of glass on top and use as a great accent table next to a chair. In your Entry Foyer, place a box on a table to place all your keys inside, or larger ones under a bench for boots and slipper storage. Yes, oh yes even outside…you can decorate with more weather resistant boxes to place mail inside, place a potted plant on top for height, store tools, pots and soil inside, and even barbeque utensils.

Now I know that there has to be a box or two out there that will compliment your personality and style, so grab them and have fun anywhere in your home!
