Well no...because, think about it, it is like a piece of Art. Area Rugs are usually placed on the floor, but picture one on the wall. They are like a heavier Tapestry or Wall Mural. As a Designer, I always get a perplexed look when I suggest this tip, but when a client views it for the first time they can not believe that they did not think of it themselves.
Some Area Rugs are just too beautiful to just step on...their great patterns and textures can be appreciated even more importantly vertically on a wall as well. As a matter of fact, they can also be hung horizontally or on a diagonal. If the rugs are thin you can even layer them over each other. All you need is to ask someone to help you hold the rug, while you tack or staple it to the wall. Just make sure the tacks or staples are long enough (3/4 inch or inch long is plenty).
They work great in narrow areas where you can not place a piece of furniture as in hallways or stair landings. What a statement the rug would make on a wall behind a sofa or even as a head board behind your bed! This is a wonderful way to bring a splash of color and design to a wall without having to paint. Rugs also serve as great backdrops to showcase collections of pictures, mirrors and wall sculptures, you can arrange and hang them right onto the rug to create an interesting overall pattern. If you have the room to place a nice console table or low chest in front of the rug, just layer the display more interestingly buy adding a small lamp, rest a mirror or art on the surface and an accessory piece. Scatter rugs come in great shapes like butterflies, flowers and shoes or even soccer balls and trains for the fun rooms like kids or theme areas. How great it would be to have a couple of 3 ft. round shaggy rugs in bright colors on the walls in a teen bedroom….awesome.
If the rug needs a little embellishing then add a wood or metal rod to the top edge then weave roping, tassels, beads, greenery swags or even a rustic branch or driftwood. Their not just practical to absorb high noise levels, but also easy to clean, just hand vacuum once in awhile.
Just have fun with this new design toy that will help create a focal point or conversation piece in your home improvement project this season!
